About Kineran
We build AI systems that work — for real businesses, in real operations.
Why Kineran Exists
I didn't start Kineran because AI is exciting. I started it because I've watched this movie before — and I know how it ends when the engineering isn't right.
My career in technology began in 1999, when I joined Amazon as a systems engineer during the early years of what would become one of the world's most demanding production environments. Over the course of two stints totaling nearly a decade, I moved from systems engineering into software development management, helping to scale the platform from a handful of markets into a global operation, and learning firsthand what it takes to keep complex systems running reliably at scale. Not just how to build them, but how to operate them: the 3am incidents, the long NOC events, the postmortems, the discipline of getting the architecture right before the stakes get too high to fix it.
In 2014, I joined a team of fewer than ten people tasked with building Oracle's cloud infrastructure from scratch. I set up the first development environment by hand, literally wiring office computers together and built the initial automation and infrastructure tooling that became part of the foundation for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Over nearly twelve years, I grew with OCI through roles spanning software development, Chief of Staff, and Director of Technical Operations — watching something go from a workbench of machines to a global cloud platform, and accumulating hard-won experience in availability, compliance, and what it actually means to operate infrastructure that other businesses depend on.
That experience is what drove me to start Kineran.
We're at an inflection point with AI that looks a lot like the early internet, a wave of genuine capability, surrounded by a fog of hype, prototypes dressed up as products, and businesses making decisions without fully understanding what they're betting on. The barrier to building something with AI has never been lower, and that's mostly good news. But it also means the market is flooded with tools and services that have never been held to any real standard of reliability, security, or compliance. Unlike a broken website, a broken AI system operating inside your business workflows can cause serious damage — to your data, your customers, and your reputation.
My thesis is straightforward: the most valuable AI opportunity right now isn't autonomous agents or moonshot automation. It's workflow-level systems, built to production standards, that make real businesses measurably more efficient today. Businesses that get this right over the next two to three years will have a compounding operational advantage. Businesses that get sold an AI wrapper and call it a transformation will be starting over.
I started Kineran to be the firm I would have wanted to hire, one that brings the engineering discipline of world-class production systems to companies that deserve that standard, regardless of their size. If you're serious about AI and you want it done right, that's who we are.

Our Mission
Most businesses know AI matters. Few know how to make it actually work inside their operations. Kineran exists to close that gap — with engineering discipline, practical delivery, and a compliance-first approach that protects our clients as the regulatory landscape continues to evolve.
We don't sell transformation programs or experimental pilots. We build production-grade AI systems that are tested, compliant, and designed to operate reliably inside the workflows your business depends on.
How We Work
Engineering Over Experimentation
We apply enterprise-grade architectural principles to every engagement. High availability, fault tolerance, and deterministic behavior are foundational — not afterthoughts.
Outcomes Over Activity
Every engagement is scoped around specific, measurable outcomes. We define what success looks like before we start, and we build to deliver it.
Responsibility Over Speed
Human-in-the-loop controls, audit trails, and regulatory compliance are built into every system we deliver. We will not build AI that operates unsupervised on consequential decisions.
Proof, Not Promises
GroundMark is a production-quality AI workflow system we built to demonstrate exactly what Kineran delivers — a fully operational maintenance triage platform for property management, with deterministic-first architecture, human-in-the-loop oversight, compliance audit trails, and real integrations with live PM platforms.
It isn't a mockup. It isn't a slide deck. It's a working system, built to the same production standard we bring to every client engagement.
The Team

Steve Layton
Founder & CEO
Steve brings 25+ years of enterprise software engineering and technical leadership experience to Kineran. His background spans high-availability cloud systems, distributed architecture, and large-scale software delivery — applying the same engineering discipline to AI systems that powers the world's most demanding production environments.
Kineran was founded on a straightforward thesis: the most valuable AI opportunity right now is not autonomous agents or experimental pilots — it is practical, workflow-level automation that delivers immediate, measurable ROI for businesses that need results, not roadmaps.
We are selectively taking on founding client engagements. Clients receive priority attention and help shape the systems and processes that will define how Kineran delivers at scale. If that sounds like the kind of partnership you're looking for, reach out.
Kineran is growing. We are actively building a team of engineers and domain specialists who share our commitment to practical, responsible AI delivery. If you're interested in working with us, reach out at contact@kineran.com.
